Does Pete Golding Have Enough Firepower to Take Ole Miss Back to the College Football Playoff?

When Lane Kiffin left Oxford, a lot of people wondered if Ole Miss could keep its momentum going. The Rebels had finally broken through, reached the College Football Playoff, and established themselves as one of the top programs in the SEC. Now the question is whether Pete Golding has enough firepower to get them back.

My answer is yes.

The biggest reason is simple: Golding understands what made Ole Miss successful in the first place. He wasn’t brought in from the outside. He helped build the foundation that turned the Rebels into a playoff contender. As defensive coordinator, he helped transform Ole Miss into a tougher, more physical football team that could compete with anyone in the country.

What impresses me most about Golding is his ability to adapt. Great coaches don’t just rely on talent. They find ways to maximize the players they have. During his time in Oxford, Ole Miss consistently fielded aggressive defenses that created turnovers, pressured quarterbacks, and made life difficult for opposing offenses.

Of course, getting back to the playoff won’t be easy. The SEC is loaded with talent every year. Programs like Texas, Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and others aren’t going anywhere. One or two losses can completely change the playoff picture.

That’s why the offense will be the key.

The defense should continue to be one of the strengths of the program under Golding, but if Ole Miss wants to make another playoff run, the offense has to produce explosive plays and finish drives consistently. Championship contenders need balance, and the Rebels will have to prove they can replace departed stars while maintaining the same level of production.

Another factor working in Golding’s favor is culture. Players have already shown they believe in him. When a coach takes over a program after a major departure, keeping the locker room together is often the toughest challenge. Golding has done a solid job maintaining stability and keeping expectations high.

The path back to the College Football Playoff won’t be easy, but Ole Miss doesn’t need a complete rebuild. This isn’t a program starting from scratch. The Rebels have talent, resources, recruiting momentum, and a coach who already knows what it takes to compete at the highest level.

So does Pete Golding have enough firepower to take Ole Miss back to the College Football Playoff?

I believe he does.

The margin for error in the SEC is razor thin, but if the defense continues to play at a high level and the offense develops into a consistent playmaking unit, don’t be surprised if Ole Miss finds itself right back in the playoff conversation when the season reaches November.

The expectations in Oxford haven’t changed.

And neither should the goal.

For Ole Miss, the College Football Playoff isn’t a dream anymore.

It’s the standard.
